To get children to bicycle more often as a means of transportation
and in place of the automobile in order to:
promote better fitness;
develop healthy habits that should extend into adulthood;
get children to bicycle more safely;
reduce pollution and all other costs associated with driving
cars;
develop safer drivers in the future—as
children bicycle they become more aware of the “rules of the road.”
To create situations in which children can enjoy the thrill of
bicycling that will then lead to a greater appreciation of:
their body (and thus the importance of staying fit);
their bicycle (and thus responsibility to maintain and care for
machines of all kinds);
the automobile, insofar as by bicycling children will grow to
recognize the privilege and benefit of driving and the significant
responsibilities that result from it;
their natural landscape (and thus greater environmental
awareness).
To keep commerce local by employing bicycling:
because the scrip is
redeemable only at local participating businesses, there is less
likelihood that purchases will be made outside the community.
